FRANKFORT, KY (November 4, 1998) Kentuckians from across the Commonwealth will convene at the Lexington Radisson Hotel on November 16 and 17 to examine and discuss the leadership challenge ahead. The fifth annual conference of the Kentucky Long-Term Policy Research Center will explore trends and issues influencing the future of the Commonwealth. This conference is designed to bring Kentucky's leaders and concerned citizens together to explore the implications of various trends affecting the Commonwealth. The Leadership Challenge Ahead promises to be a landmark event, one that will feature some of the Commonwealth's leading thinkers and innovators. They will address some of the most difficult challenges before us, chart the problems and opportunities they anticipate on the horizon, and speculate on what the future is likely to hold. The alternative scenarios they suggest will provide provocative food for thought and unprecedented opportunity to think and plan more effectively for what lies ahead for Kentucky. On Monday, November 16, 1998, the Center will present a pre-conference workshop on the timely topic of Civic Entrepreneurship. Led by Kentucky native Douglas Henton, nationally recognized author of Grassroots Leaders for a New Economy. Ronald Heifetz, Director of Harvards Leadership Education Project at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, called the book "a seminal work in fleshing out the kind of leadership we need to renew and prepare communities for the demands of democracy in the coming era." The workshop will give participants tools to use in building citizen participation in problem-solving, planning and community development. Henton and his partners at Collaborative Economics based in Palo Alto, California, train community and corporate leaders in proven methods of assembling a team of civic entrepreneurs to act on issues of importance. Henton and Collaborative Economics specialize in highly interactive workshops that feature video profiles from communities around the nation that have successfully marshaled grassroots leaders to tackle local and regional issues. The results-oriented workshop will prepare attendees to return to their communities with skills, as well as a thorough understanding of the concept and the practice of civic entrepreneurship. Specifically, attendees will come away with transferable ideas and innovations from other locales, the tools to evaluate prospects for their own communities, and a full understanding of what needs to be done to take action in their own communities. On Tuesday, November 17, 1998, the Centers annual one-day conference, The Leadership Challenge Ahead, will feature leading thinkers in discussions of issues before Kentucky. Governor Patton will open the conference, followed by six sessions on diverse issues of fundamental importance to the state. These panel discussions will focus on:
